I (Heart) Advent Calendars.

I remember them being one of my favourite things about the holiday season.  Everyday my sister and I would run downstairs, open a little paper door and get a chocolate (before breakfast)!!  This year our family has a fabric Christmas tree with numbered ornaments because (as we all know) the chocolate advent calendars are just NOT what they used to be.

So here are some advent calendar ideas to get everyone into this wonderful tradition I love so much!

Garland
This is such a simple design but how wonderful!  I found this on Design*Sponge by d.sharp.
This cute idea for anyone who knits is from CasaSugar
Scrapbook Style
This is such a great way to use mixed media.  Look closely – it’s a cookie sheet!  There’s scrapbook paper, chipboard letters, ribbon, magnets.  This looks like a really fun project or gift idea!  From Making Memories.

Wooden

I’m not as much a fan of this one as I was last week.  You can find this one at Target or at Home Outfitters in Canada.  It looks okay in the picture, but it’s actually quite small in real life.  I’ve seen it for $15 state side but here in Canada this one is a pricey $40.

National Lampoon's Christmas House

Now this – THIS – is the Advent Calendar to reign over all other Advent Calendars.  Does it look familiar??  This is an exact replica of the one Chevy Chase had in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.  I would give an eye tooth for this one.  (Well not really).

From Christmas Advent House.   They cost $595 US each, plus $89 US shipping. The house also has to be ordered a year in advance.  Dimensions 31.25″ W x 21.5″H x 11″D. 22 pounds.  22 POUNDS!  Hokey Smokes!

I am happy to have found this but… that is some price tag.  Maybe if I win the lottery.  Think – family heirloom – family heirloom… nope still too expensive.

The Haunted Housewarming

Another Halloween past.  Another Successful party!  Everyone had a great time last night at the Haunted Housewarming (even recovering Baby Cupcake who trick-or-treated for the first time!)  Once again – there was way too much food.  To think that I even had a worry!  Check out these photos!

Goodies for the Haunted Housewarming

It is Monday.  Housewarming is Friday.  OMG… really…. that is not a lot of time.  I’m starting to feel the crunch that every hostess feels about this time.  The co-ordination crunch.  Do I have this, when should I make that, supplies check, costume check… what am I missing – etc.

As soon as I am done this post I am off to do baking for the party.  I thought that maybe this would be a good time to share with you some of the treats I am thinking of making for the big PAR-TAY.

Of course, I have to give credit to my fellow bloggers who shared all their great Halloween ideas recently and totally inspired my menu!

First is:

Vampire Cupcakes by Baking Bites

Vanilla Cupcakes with Cherry Filling for the blood!

 Second:

Bakerella’s  Pumpkin Pecan Chocolate Chunk Cookies With Maple Brown Butter Frosting (what a mouthful!)

These look to die for! Can’t wait to try them!

Third:

Cake truffles and Candied apples like the ones featured here by Williams Sonoma

And what about that Halloween tree??  Well I couldn’t really find any hardcore inspiration on the web for one… Halloween tree’s just aren’t that popular… yet.  I’ll push the movement :)   But I did find an all right one over at Better Homes and Gardens

A Much Needed Post

Has it really been so long… my oh my. What a busy June I have been having. My maternity leave has now ended and I am back at my “grown up, no fun job” which is leaving me in a bit of a time crunch and one hell of a blog bust – but I’m doing my best.
Papa and baby Lily on Father’s Day
I will start with Father’s day – the cupcake family and I travelled to the city to visit the grandcupcakes – which was very, very busy. (My parents have three big dogs and we have two which makes for a very hairy household. Keep that in mind when you consider that my parents are showing their house for sale… you can imagine what kind of chaos ensued. We spent much of the weekend walking five unruly dogs and one baby.) Despite the bussle of the weekend I managed to scramble together some breakfast cupcakes for the boys on Daddy’s day… (much to my father’s complaining – “Whatr’u makin’? I like my eggs the way I like my eggs… Don’t you go changin’ my eggs…” Followed shortly by… “Hey, these are really good!” Ha!

Breakfast Cupcakes
I came across this idea on the Martha Stewart Show some time ago.
Ingredients
all to your desired quantity

  • Fresh soft bread, regular sliced buttered lightly on one side
  • Medium eggs
  • Thin sliced breakfast meat (back bacon, prosciutto, ham)
  • Grated cheese
  • Fresh herbs
  • Salt and Pepper
  1. Gently fold a single slice of bread into a standard muffin cup buttered side down, molding it into the sides of the pan. If bread is too old it may crack. Continue until you have as many “cupcakes” as you need.
  2. Bake molded bread at 350*F until bread is slightly toasted… this prevents the eggs from oozing through the soft bread.
  3. When bread is toasted line the bottom of your “cupcakes” with the thinly sliced meat.
  4. Crack an egg over the meat.
  5. Top with shredded cheese and herbs
  6. Bake until eggs are done to your likeness

I very much prefer this to the standard bacon and eggs breakfast because this is a one pan meal, baby!

“It’s my Party!”

The second thing I will catch you up on is my Little Cupcake’s 1st birthday invitations! I am so excited for her party! I had decided on a bumblebee theme oh so long ago and when this picture was taken of my little one I knew where I wanted to use it!

The Power of Positive Thinking… Really?

My Inspiration Board… though it needs some serious work.

So, Oprah and I got to sit down together today for the first time in a LONG time. (And by sit down with Oprah I mean that she was on her couch and I was on mine with the TV in between us.) Today she was talking about the now famous book “The Secret” – and who hasn’t heard about “The Secret.” I find myself – like SOOO many others – not wanting to be the least bit skeptical of this idea. After all, all you have to do is think positively. Why not???
But I must say that the documentary (if you can call it that) was a little laughable… I was wondering when they were going to tell me that for three easy payments I could be the happiest girl in the world.

Anyway – with my baby having been some kind of sick over the past week and with taking her back and forth from the doctor’s I was feeling like I needed a little something positive to lift my spirits. Now that baby is sleeping comfortably (for the first time in a whole week) I have decided that the “universe” must be telling me to write about Inspiration Boards… or Vision Boards… or Go Boards whatever you prefer to call them.
Personally, I have always loved to plaster my walls with posters and pictures of things that I loved… All though, now that I think of it, I never married a rock star and believe me I had rock star wallpaper as a teenager… You’d think the universe would have picked up on that… hmmm

Currently my inspiration board is a little lacking. So I did some searching on the Internet and found this little beauty which really lifted my spirits… I’ll continue in a minute…

Inspiration from A Cottage Industry

So I suppose the “universe” has delivered to me this gorgeous blog called A Cottage Industry… which by the way dropped my jaw! If there are such things as kindred blogs I want this one to be mine… cupcakes and cottage country… oh my. It has made my day and I’m sure part of it is going to wind up on my inspiration board. Wahoo!

Molly

Almost a year ago we lost our Shar Pei to cancer. She was two years old. Molly had to have been the most amazing dog I have ever come across in my life. Everywhere we went people would stop us to ask about Molly. What kind of dog is that? Is she friendly?

When Molly was a little pup she was so wrinkly her eyes wouldn’t open – we even took her to the vet to make sure her eyes were ok. She snored like a – well – she snored louder than any creature I have ever encountered and her face always had the same expression. Her face was as soft as velvet, and when she licked you it was like being kissed by a big baseball glove… only a really slobbery one.

She could fetch, snort and sneak into bed so we wouldn’t notice… but she couldn’t do tricks. She loved Pringles and popcorn… and garbage. She destroyed my house on more that one occasion but, in the end, all has been forgiven. In our opinion she had to leave us much too soon and everyday we miss her.

I had started a painting of her for my husband… but didn’t have the heart to finish it, until now.

Blog Spotlight: The Brassy Apple

I stumbled upon this today: The Brassy Apple by artist/designer Megan. On her page she has some lovely tutorials including one on how to decoupage a desk with fabric. The outcome is just stunning and what a more appropriate project for this year’s garage sale season!

Cookie Cutter Wall Art

This weekend’s project was to spruce up the wall behind my dining room table. I had recently painted it a nice mint color (over top of beige, icky) to bring some flow in from the robins egg colored kitchen… and then we added the white table and mirror – which to me are still somewhat ho hum. I wanted to invest in some of those neat vinyl graphics to put on this wall, but, I have NO budget.

What I DID have, however, were a whole pail full of cookie cutters and some white paint. Say no more, I began tracing and painting this simple and delightful piece of wall art.

Overall it came out very subtle and it doesn’t overpower the room – which is good unless you want to take pictures of it. My poor old 3 mega pixel camera had some trouble with capturing this – hopefully you get the idea! I’ve included a black and white photo just to exaggerate the pattern on my wall.

Look What Came in the Mail!!!

Mr. Cupcake surprised me with a little present today. Cupcake ribbon, what fun!!! I am truly excited – but – at the same time a little afraid… It is huge! 1.5″ wide… What does a person do with ribbon that wide??? Goodness me, I would feel so bad to waste it! Any ideas?
